A few months later, its position was to be usurped by Kid A, and I've bought many more albums since but both would still comfortably be in my top 40 or 50 overall and top 2 in the Radiohead catalogue (and I actually don't mind Fitter Happier!) - can't think of any other band/artist from the last 20 years that has had such an impressive run as The Bends -> Kid A. I scored an import CD single of "PA" at Newbury Comics and then drove down to the Tower in Burlington, MA, to get Computer at midnight.
There were about 30 people in line, mostly frat-types. Despite not having a hit anywhere near the size of Creep, Radiohead’s previous album The Bends (1995) was successful enough for their record company EMI to give. Turns out there was a Blues Traveler live album coming out on 7/1, as well - wonderful. I finally got up to the counter and made the staff search the back room until they finally dug it up. Got home at about 12:30 and laid in bed listening to the album on repeat until the sky started getting light. I listen to other stuff that came out in '97 more often now than I do Computer, but that album really just defined the year in a way that no other record has ever even come close. #Ok computer radiohead walkman pomo android#.
